Catalogue summary
Sigma 701 completes KSV's range of surface chemistry analyzing instruments. This
automatic Tensiometer measures the surface and interfacial tension of liquids by
Du-Nouy ring or Wilhelmy Plate method. Designed to be cost effective and
powerful all round Tensiometer, Sigma 701 takes the lead in easiness of
operation and versatility of use.
The Measuring System
The Sigma 701 consist of the Interface Unit and the System Unit.
The Interface Unit include the power supply, and one
digital display. The display can be configured to display the on-line status of
surface tension (mN/m) or the weight of the probe in milligrams (mg).
There are empty slide-in slots in the Interface Unit for the
circuit cards of optional accessories. These accessories include a temperature
controller with digital display and thermostated water jacket, stirrer,
dispenser and printer and computer interfaces.
The Measuring Unit houses an electronic micro balance, the measuring
chamber and the servo controlled stage drive system. The measuring range of the
balance is 25mN and the resolution 1 N (respectively 250 mN/m with 0.01 mN/m
with standard Du-Nouy ring). The speed of the stage is user selectable. Tarring
and calibration of the balance is automatic.
The wide opening doors in the front allow easy
access into the measuring chamber while providing protection from environmental
disturbances.
A thermostated vessel for sample temperature control, an analogue or digital
thermometer are supplied separately as an accessories. For other accessories see
section Up-grading the Sigma 701.
Methods of Measurement
Sigma 701 measures the time dependency of the surface or interfacial tension of
liquids by standard Du-Du-Nouy or Wilhelmy Plate method. The instrument can also
perform repetitive pull to maximum force with out braking the lamella. The
maximum force will be displayed in clear digits in the display panel of the
Interface Unit.
A wettability studies can be performed when the instrument is
configured to measure the weight of the probe. Measuring the density of liquids
and determination of mass, volume and density of solids is possible in this mode
of operation.
Up-grading the Sigma 701
By use of dedicated up-grade packages with software it is possible to customize the instrument to perform variety of measurements. These include,
Critical Micelle Concentration , Dynamic Receding and Advancing Contact Angles,
Surface Free Energy, Adsorption/Absorption and Density of liquids. Up-grade
package consisting of a high sensitivity balance and special software allow
characterization of wettability of single fibers. See specifications for the
details of up-grade packages.
The empty slide-in slots in the Interface Unit are
used for the circuit cards of optional accessories. These accessories include a
temperature controller with digital display and thermostated water jacket,
stirrer, dispenser and printer and computer interfaces.
